After it was confirmed earlier this week that the 2010 Brandon Buzz would not continue, Brandon Police have issued a statement to BrandonSuffolk.com.
The statement, sent through from Sgt Chisnall, reads as follows...
"The safety of the public is our primary concern, and we have worked with the organisers of the Brandon Buzz since January this year to ensure that this is properly considered in line with national guidance, which covers all public events from small fetes to air shows. Suffolk Constabulary is required to comply with the Operational Planning Event Assessment Guide published by the National Policing Improvement Agency.
This guide ensures that all events are assessed with regard to risk and the likely policing numbers to mitigate this risk. A further assessment is made to determine whether the organisers of such events should pay for police services.
Suffolk Constabulary has given advice and an estimated cost for policing this event based upon the activities to be held, expected numbers and issues at previous events. There were a number of incidents of violence and disorder at the Brandon Buzz in 2009 where arrests were made for affray, assault and public order offences. Of particular concern was the gathering of around 300 people in the area of the leisure centre on Church Road on the evening of Sunday 26th July 2009. Those officers already on patrol at the event requested further assistance due to the large numbers of persons displaying rowdy and disorderly behaviour under the influence of alcohol. To ensure the safety of all those in attendance, the event was closed down early at around 10.25pm and the crowd dispersed almost an hour later. This disorder had to be taken into account when deciding the level of security provision needed for this year's application.
The vast majority of community-based events will be low risk according to the national guidance, and will not require police attendance or cost. However, Suffolk's Safer Neighbourhood Teams will continue to attend community events to engage with the public and ensure everyone can enjoy the wide range of activities on offer."
BrandonSuffolk.com would like to thank Brandon Police for the above statement, and hope it answers some questions for the people of Brandon.
