Two residential properties in Brandon have been closed down after Suffolk Constabulary made an application under section 11 of the Anti-Social Behaviour Act 2003.

Temporary closure notices were served at 15 and 26 Knappers Way on Wednesday 28th July and this afternoon, Friday 6th August, at Bury St Edmunds Magistrates Court, full closure orders were granted for three months.

The orders were applied for following persistent anti-social behaviour in Knappers Way over the past three months. Complaints were received from residents of disturbances, noise and alcohol-related nuisance, and some criminal offences were also disclosed which have been dealt with by way of cautions and community resolution.

This issue was adopted as a priority for the Brandon Safer Neighbourhood Team to work on with partners. Forest Heath Safer Neighbourhood Team Inspector Neil Ireland says, "I am very pleased to have secured these closures as it is the first time this legislation has been used in Suffolk. People living in this area of Brandon had complained that anti-social behaviour was making their lives a misery, and it was getting worse. The problem was adopted as an SNT Priority so that Housing, Police, Social Services, District Council and Environmental Health could work together to find a way forward.

"The SNT gathered statements from local people and there was sufficient evidence to successfully apply for the closure orders today. Nobody is allowed on the premises without the authority of the court or police whilst the order is in place."

A spokesperson for Forest Heath District Council added, "Forest Heath District Council is determined to tackle anti-social behaviour by working with Suffolk Police in action like this."

Insp Ireland continues, "We will continue to work with our partners to ensure that youth nuisance and anti-social behaviour problems are removed from Knappers Way and do not return. Anti-social behaviour such as this will not be tolerated anywhere in Suffolk, and we will seek to use this legislation in the future for any properties that become associated with this sort of behaviour.

"No-one should have to put up with such issues where they live, and anyone with any concerns should contact their local Safer Neighbourhood Team who will be able to take appropriate action with partners. I would like to thank the residents of Knappers Way for their cooperation and assistance with these orders and I hope that the road returns to what it was previously, a peaceful place to live."
