A fundraiser has been launched to enable the completion of a new BMX track in Brandon.
The construction of the BMX track forms part of a larger project to upgrade the existing skate park and provide additional facilities for young people to enjoy.
With the existing skate park closed due to safety concerns, former councillor Gary Brocklehurst saw it as an opportunity to not only upgrade the skate park but create something much bigger and better.
Work started on the project in January and has so far progressed due to the generosity of local businesses and individuals however, in order to complete the first stage, much needed funds are now required to move forward.
Once the BMX track has been completed work will then begin on upgrading the now dilapidated skate park with plans also in the pipeline for a pump track for younger children to enjoy.
Mr Brocklehurst said, I visited the Remembrance Playing Fields during the week and it seemed quite under used apart from around 15 youngsters at the skate park. We are all aware of the need to give the youngsters somewhere to go and this seems to be one spot they actually want to visit so why not invest in something they actually want.
“The Brandon people and businesses generosity has once again shone through, my aim now is to create a pot for this project and others where we can the seek ‘match funding’ from the district and county councils.
“I have one other idea for the play equipment but that is still in the formative stages but if the green light is given will provide further lasting legacies to the town’s youngsters.”
