Fire crews from two counties spent much of the afternoon tackling a forest blaze on the outskirts of Brandon.

Appliances from Suffolk and Norfolk Fire and Rescue Services were mobilised to the incident at 12.38pm on Wednesday 20th April.

The incident occurred in an area of forest just off the A1065 to the south-west of Brandon where approximately 200m x 200m of undergrowth was well alight on arrival of the fire crews.

A total of eleven appliances from Methwold, Thetford, Ixworth, Bury St Edmunds, Brandon, Mildenhall and Newmarket were called to deal with the fire.

The fire later spread to 4000 square metres of standing timber and firefighters used hose reels, beaters and a misting unit to bring the fire under control.

A stop to the incident was called at 3.51pm with two appliances remaining on scene before handing the scene over to the Forestry Commission.

Officers from Suffolk Police were also called to help with traffic management due to the location of the fire.
