Anglia in Bloom judges tour Brandon despite rain

  • 28th July 2025

On Thursday 24th July, RHS Anglia in Bloom judges Julia Smith and Simon White visited Brandon for their annual evaluation, braving persistent rain – a sharp contrast to their visit in July 2022 during record-breaking heat.

The tour began at The Heritage Centre with a warm welcome from manager Jenny Brocklehurst, a presentation highlighting the group’s work over the past year, and a regency-themed performance by Weeting All Star Performers.

Judges then viewed water butt planters around town, admired the Rose Garden and Wellington Close wildlife area, and visited Glade Academy, where pupils proudly showcased colourful planters and vegetable plots watered by a solar pump. The judges awarded the school a certificate for its “Young Persons” project.

Next stops included Brandon Country Park, where rangers and volunteers guided them through the walled garden and lake, followed by the Friendly Bench, where the Brandon Happy to Sing Choir performed despite the rain. They also toured the King’s Coronation Garden, the volunteer hub known as The Hive, and Market Hill, where they admired floral displays, children’s games painted on the square, and creative regency-themed shop windows – including the “Regency Zoo” and parasol window display celebrating 30 years of Anglia in Bloom.

Other highlights included a demonstration of a pollution monitor used to show how planting helps reduce particulates, and a visit to the Wedge’s standout features: a green wall by Fred the Flintknapper, fruit-laden trees, and repurposed floral display pieces. After a group photo, judges continued to neighbourhood projects including Princes Close, Brandon Allotments, St Peter’s Centre, Green Road, and the Harvest Centre, where volunteers provided refreshments to conclude the day.

In a follow-up email, the judges thanked the team for their hospitality, praising the dedication of volunteers and their passion for improving the local environment. Results will be announced on 4th September in St Ives.

Brandon in Bloom extended thanks to its hardworking volunteers, sponsors, and supporters for their efforts throughout the year. With Britain in Bloom judging set for 7th August, the team’s work continues to ensure the town remains bright, welcoming, and environmentally friendly.
