Those visiting car parks in two parts of West Suffolk will need to display a free parking ticket from next week.
The changes are being brought in at the Bury Road car park in Brandon and at the Moreton Hall car parks on Lawson Place and Community Centre.
In Brandon the Bury Road car park is currently unrestricted and will become a short stay car park with a maximum stay of three hours. Long stay parking will continue to be available in the George Street car park.
Local businesses on Moreton Hall in Bury St Edmunds had complained that car parks were often full with vehicles that had parked there all day despite there being a three hour limit (four on Sundays). With no system to verify when people had arrived, it was difficult to enforce.
Drivers visiting any of the car parks where the new enforcements are in place will need to display a free ticket during their stay.
Those parking in either location will need to enter their registration number at one of the newly installed machines to obtain their ticket to display in their vehicle.
Cllr Peter Stevens, Cabinet Member for Operations which includes car parks, said: “We consulted with local businesses, car park users and other partners during the car parks review.
“We have listened to the concerns raised and have worked with them to create a solution to the parking issues they were experiencing in Brandon and on Moreton Hall. We are now bringing in these changes and naturally, we will monitor its effectiveness.”
The limits will apply in Brandon’s Bury Road car park between 8am and 6pm Monday to Saturday and 11am to 4pm on Sunday. In the Moreton Hall car parks they will apply between 9.30am and 3pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 3pm on Sunday.
